Methodology

The implementation of the project combines innovative methodological approaches from science and technology, focusing on a dialectical connection between citizens and history through new technologies (Digital Memories):

1. Research: basic research, documentation, production of innovative digitisation tools

Research includes (a) the collection and annotation of an extensive literature (studies, monographs, scientific articles, doctoral theses, local history studies, memoirs, scrapbooks), (b) the identification and documentation of 200 annotated primary sources (archival documents, legislative texts, extracts from newspapers, magazines, literary texts, oral testimonies, photographs) that will form the digital anthology; (c) the systematic recording of cultural resources and institutions (monuments, museums, exhibitions, associations), which will form the digital map. At the same time, part of the research will concern the technological possibilities for the digitisation and promotion of cultural resources. The collection and cataloguing will be captured in the 100sources Platform (P1), which is a single level of information data production.2. Co-Produce: participatory research, outreach activities, interactive platform

In contrast to traditional historiography where research is carried out in a closed academic context, in 100memories the production of knowledge and the creation of technological tools is (also) based on the interactive participation of citizens in both physical and digital spaces. Combining methodological tools from history, geography, cultural studies and social anthropology, open workshops on spatial and architectural design (Piraeus, Volos), workshops on local/performance history (Chania, Thessaloniki) and educational activities in schools (Piraeus) will be held. In the context of participatory activities, the results of technological research will also be evaluated through pilot actions. At the same time, the 100reflections Platform (P2) – an open digital learning platform – will be developed, which will be fed by the material of the workshops on the one hand and by the project’s outreach processes on the other hand.

3. Co-Own: promotion, dissemination and exploitation of the material

The objective is to highlight and disseminate research results. Dissemination will not only take place through the expected academic communication channels (conferences, publications, etc.) and in expected venues (museums, archives, libraries). The aim is to transform, through new technological tools, the spaces of everyday life into common spaces for the renegotiation of memory and history. Through the creation of phydigital routes (refugee neighbourhoods) and games (parks), the realisation of pop up museum exhibitions (pavements, markets, squares) and the final large exhibition to be hosted within a city’s port or railway station) we create the conditions for the appropriation of the project’s results by a wide audience in original ways. The methodology for developing the technological tools will be based on the logic of raspberry pies as a location-based collective awareness toolkit, QR codes, augmented reality and 3D representations. These activities will also be hosted on the 100places Platform (P3).

The research project is implemented in the framework of the action RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE and is co-funded by the European Union and national resources through the Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (EPANEK) (project code: T2EDK-04827)
